Replacing Sun Ringle Charger Pro with Syntace MX35 (The Lost Wheelset)

I've recently been looking for a new set of wheels for my Norco Sight Killer B. I've had the bike since April and the Sun Ringle Charger Pro's that came with it don't seem to be up to the conditions in my part of the world.

Like others have said on these forums , the hubs are sealed badly , the free hub especially so. I've already had to replace the free hub bearings and it looks like there is also slight play in the alloy axle tube that holds the X12 syntace axle. To make matters worse on tuesday night i broke a spoke , and they are not easy to get hold of . The Sun Ringle UK distributors are Hotlines and they have no stock of them . I can't find them available in a small quantity anywhere else. The spoke needed is drive side rear which is a 2mm 283mm long straight pull black
    double butted spoke .

Anyway, i've decided now that this set will become a spare set of wheels as it's not reliable enough or easy enough to repair to have as my only set of wheels. I started looking for replacements and came across the Syntace MX35 which was well received when introduced , won a Pink Bike award in 2012 and everyone raved about Syntace quality , the long warranty and the strength , width and lightness of the wheel. These wheels seem to have almost dropped off the face of the planet , it's hard to find any testimony of anyone using them at all , especially recently , and no one hardly sells them online apart from Syntace themselves and Bike DE .

I ordered a set from Bike Discount DE , they were listed as orange (waiting for stock) but later that day Bike DE emailed back to say that the delivery date for the wheels was unknown. I tried emailing Syntace asking about availability of the wheels , but they haven't replied in the last two days so i've decided not to go ahead with the purchase. If the company can't be bothered to reply to you when you are about to pull the trigger on a nearly 900 set of their wheels , then sorry they don't deserve the business.

I just wondered whether anyone knew anything about the Syntace MX wheels why they are so rare , and difficult to obtain . Whether they are too expensive now with so many cheap carbon rims coming out etc.

Carbon rims for me are not an option as we have a lot of granite round here as well as mud and i'm too worried about rock strikes. I decided to order a set of Flow EX with DT 350 hubs as that combo seems tried and tested.

It's a shame that the 2013 Norco came with the Charger Pro Wheelset , Norco seem to have moved totally away from Sun Ringle for the 2014 wheel sets and it's pretty obvious why. Having said that Sun Ringles tech department and customer service has been helpful so far which is more than you can say for Syntace.

    Hey Jack

The flu has been going around Bavaria and I know several people at Syntace Germany have been sick and out of the office so maybe they are behind in their responses.

The wheels have been fairly hard to get hold of since demand in Germany and Austria has been very high. I'm not sure of the situation in the UK but we have had limited availability here in the states but now they are mostly available (at least in W35 and some W30).

The (German made) hubs are loud but they are great hubs! They are very similar to DT Swiss ratchet drive hubs but due to the smaller springs they use in the drive mechanism we use oil rather than grease which can cause problems with the ratchets. They are super easy to service and maintain and you can quiet them down by adding some fresh 30w gear oil - just grab the cassette and pull off with the cassette rotor and axle attached. Or, pull the cassette off and knock off the end caps from the inside with a plastic stick or similar "tool". Make sure you account for all the parts especially the rubber seal between the cassette rotor and the hub shell and the thin shims under the end caps (the shims are what adjust the lateral play.

We've been riding the wheels here for over a year with great results. The wide rims paired with Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35 (for 26") and 2.25 for 27.5 ride beautifully! And the hub noise keeps the bears and lions away!

BTW - the UK distributor is listed below although it looks like they are in the Netherland. But, if you ever have a question you can always direct it to us in the US for a quick answer or help to re-direct!

Thankyou for the replies guys. I did receive a quick mail from Syntace Germany today apologising for late reply and informing me that MX35's would probably be available at the end of November.

Hotlines are the official distributor for Sun Ringle in UK and they told me today they have no stock of the correct 650b spokes and don't expect to have any this side of Christmas, because they have already just placed their order . I explained this to Sun Ringles tech department and they are going to send me out some spares to keep me going . Despite me not really being happy with the product , and Hotlines not holding a full range of spares, the support from the tech department at Sun Ringle has been really good.

Nevermind the spokes...Universal has the Syntase wheels in stock. The OP is from the UK, so I am not sure that makes sense. Ordering spokes from the States does not.

Hi. Just got W30. Today is first test. Hub is very loud, almost embarrassing, however build quality is amazing.

Anyway, guys for Ireland can get them for you. They are distributors and shipping will be low. Give them a call or email them and I am sure they will be able to get them for you (it took them 2 weeks to get mine) as they seems to have some traction with Syntace: MadElkCycles.com

Plus they are now official distributor of BOS suspension for UK. They have all bike porn you can imagine. Great guys.

Since were on the topic, I am looking to get a Liteville 301. However, I cant seem to get any response from syntace usa. Im in the US and I cant seem to find a dealer close by and I also have more questions regarding bike fit/frame size.

Same. Email madelkcycles.com as they have one hanging on the wall (black 301). I've seen it while collecting my wheels. They ship all over the world (it's like 50 Euro or something for shipping). Even if you won't buy it they will be able to answer your questions as they are certified distributor and have all their stuff in the shop (and sold few 301 already). Handlebars are next on my radar.

Off the topic. To quiet down Syntace hub, just add few drops of 30W oil. This tip is from their FB.

Yesterday I found the rear axle on my Charger Pro broken and emailed the tech dept for the part # for a replacement and also asked if there was a bolt-on axle option. They replied today that they're sending both to me free of charge.
