2014 Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt 27.5 Coming!

    Hey all,

Just stopped in my lbs and got to see an early release of the new '14 Rocky Mountain catalog. There is a new 5" travel 27.5" wheeled bike called the "Thunderbolt". Looks very nice! No ride 9 system to simplify things. It uses the same smoothlink suspension design, and one thing I looked for was the top tube length on the large 19", which was 615mm, or 24.2 inches, which is a little longer than on their Altitude. I like this, as it allows for a shorter stem, and not too cramped of cockpit. There were 4 alloy models in the catalog with a carbon model in the works so says the lbs owner. Top 2 models had fox forks and 2x10, the 3rd model had an x-fusion fork with 3x10(that will be a good value as I got to see a new 27.5 32mm x-fusion and it is nice, especially for the money). The colors look very nice as well! That's about all I can remember. There ya go!

The Thunderbolt is the resurrection of a classic RM bike. I can remember coveting the original T-Bolt (steel!) hardtail. Here...

Not a 650b bike though, so it must have sucked.

Isn't that what the altitude is? Mid travel 650b ride 9? Is this replacing that?

Are RM frames still welded in Canada?

Did you see the name Thunderbolt in the material or did the shop owner tell you this? Maybe he's a bit misinformed...

Nope, he told me about it, and then I looked at it in pics of the 2014 Rocky Mountain catalog for 5-10 minutes. It's definitely called the Thunderbolt, and it looks very good! It's coming soon....I'm sure it'll be announced within the next month or so. He's not misinformed.

Saw the same pictures today. Geometry looked great. No carbon version for 2014. Looks like the end of the element 26.

Rode one for a quick lap... going to be a good value full suspension bike for those who dont ride crazy gnarly trails and dont need 150mm or don't want a full xc race bike...

There was at least another two lower specced models on the following page.
Looks like a good range of price points.
    Anyone know when they're available?

Except for the flatlines they haven't been welded in canada for years. They only bother to do the flatlines domestically because they make very few of them. Everything else is Taiwan, China or Mexican sourced. All they do in canada is paint the frames and assemble the bikes.

Ironically to the relaunch of the thunderbolt model name, I just sold my 1988 RM Thunderbolt frame on sunday to a guy in Vancouver.

Hmm. Looks like a good Solo competitor. Adding it to my (already too long) Interbike demo list.

I thought the same. Looks like there will be no need for the XC 26er.
