Thoughts on Rock Shox Judy Race 2001?

I bought this bike with the Judy Race 2001 Fork on it and it seems to respond to adjustments and the stancions(sp?) seem dry, no fluid leaks, but to set my sag, I feel like I am maxing out the preload to get maybe 20mm sag. Iím 215lbs. Iím wondering if this will be ok for casual trail riding, and some spirited bursts. Iíd rather not change out forks, as I just donít want to fork out money on the bike. I plan to upgrade in the next year and keep this as a back-up or single tracker as my skill progresses.

is this still a viable piece? Can I still get replacement parts for it?

I had a Judy back in the day (came on a 2001 GT iDrive) and it was fine at the time (I'm 215lbs as well). Obviously, there are huge improvements over the last 17 years but if it's in decent shape it should get you by. I think you can still get seals, wipers, etc. for fairly cheap if you search around. Shouldn't cost much to do the service and replace 'soft' parts...plenty of vid's/links on how to do service. Then give it a few rides to see if you can live with it.

If you can find them, you can change out the springs for heavier ones. I believe this takes the common 28mm seals and wipers which are easy to find if you ever need to change those out.

I do need heavier ones. Red and Black as a matter of fact!

Going on a ride tomorrow, we will see how it does after setting sag and rebound. Thanks for the input. I know thereís better forks out there, Iím just trying to keep this old girl rolling without changing too much!

If I did, Iíd probably make the step to the Recon Silver, do a disc brake front wheel setup, and carbon bars and new stem.
