    My old Psychosis is drawing attention again.

    Yes, I ride bigger wheel full suspension bikes too (27.5 & 29) but this one is like a bmx to me, at 6'4". I love how flickable it is in comparison to more modern bikes with bigger travel.

    This is a 1997 full suspension xc bike, 2.25 inches of travel in the back. It is really pedal efficient. Bombproof chromoly frame, 20 inch. Short wheelbase, super fast handling. One of my favorite bikes.


    Limited production run, not sure how many were made. I think there only 300 made. Bill Stevenson is a custom builder out of Olympia, Washington. He does (or did) mostly made to order one-off frames but he did a few limited production runs too, including some titanium frames I think.

    The drivetrain is an oddity but it is perfect for me. It is a 3x8 that goes
    18/26/34x11-13-16-19-23-28-34-42. The 18x42 is an extreme bailout gear for really steep pitches and high altitude. The 26t middle ring works well for most of my trail riding.

    Race Face cranks 18/26/34 with a Mtn Tamer Triple.
    Custom cassette 11-42, eight speed
    Cane Creek rear wheel
    Mavic/Ariel front wheel. (Never seen another Ariel hub anywhere).
    Xt Thumb Shifters 7/8 speed
    Shimano Shadow-Style Xt rear derailleur. (9 speed, works w/ 8 too)

    Kalloy gold anodized stem, 120mm
    27 inch wide riser bar - not sure what brand
    Quill-style bar-ends (They plug in vs clamping on, saves bar space)

    It is a Hite Rite, which was the original dropper post. Release the seat qr lever and the seat goes down and pops back up to full height. Tightening the qr while on the bike takes some practice. There was a remote lever made by IRD that could activate the qr lever from the handlebar, much like today's modern dropper posts.

    Interesting how many of what I would consider modern elements are on that frame. Curved seat tube with what looks like short chainstays, dropper post, multi-pivot suspension linkage, beefy tires... yet it doesnt even have v brakes! looks like it was ahead of its time. It also looks like fruity pebbles.

    So that rear shock has a pivot from the seatstays?

    I don't think Bill made a 22" version of the Psychosis frame. As it is, the 20" fits pretty well. For reference, the Kona in the first set of pics is also a 20", but there is less seatpost extension on the Psychosis. The one on the Kona is a 430mm ti post, it goes into the frame far enough to not raise any safety issues. Here are pics of my Stevenson custom bike. Even on a 21.5" frame it takes a long post. I have especially long legs and arms for my height, which is why I got a custom frame years ago. This one was built in 1997.

Being able to trackstand well, and having a good spin helps. Also I live at 7,000 feet and the mountains here go up to 12,000 feet so low gears are nice when the air gets thin.

    The 18x42 combo on my 26x2.1 tire yields 11.1 gear inches. According to Tom, the guy who made the Mtn Tamer Quad and Mtn Tamer Triple granny ring adapters, (or the White Industries Limbo Spider both of which utilize an 18t Suntour Type-A freewheel cog) it is possible to go down to 10 gear inches and still remain upright and move forward.

    The 26x42 (16.1 gear inches) combo helps me stay in the middle ring more often and is just slightly lower than the 18x28 (16.7 gear inches).
