Do any of you run 1x11 or 1x12 on your 26er?

I was wondering if any of you had clearance issues with the derailleur on a 1x11 or 1x12 setup on your 26'ers.

I have a Shimano 1x11. Run a 34 tooth with a 11-42 cassete. runs great.....no issues. May have topend issues if you have skinny fast tires on the road, but that is it.

The 1x groupset mechs are the same length more or less as the old long cage mechs for 3x groupsets, clearance isn't an issue.

I'm running 1x11 on the ole Giant. RF 32T NW cog, and Shimano 11-42 cassette with SLX derailleur and shifter. So far, so good.

1x's have been in use on 26ers for years, now. I'm guessing most use them and they've never been a problem. I've had 2 26ers with 1x11 and my son has a third. But when you ask about clearance issues, clearance from what? If it's the ground, I suppose the 1x12 would be a slightly bigger issue, but I doubt it's a deal breaker.

    I may be wrong, but can't you use a shorter cage on a 1x, Vs. a 3x?

I figured the 1x11 and 1x12 would have a longer cage than like a 9 or 10. I have 2x10 and have hit my der a few times coming close to big rocks and roots.

The Eagle derailleur is HUGE, and it does hang down quite a bit compared to 11 speed SRAM derailleurs.

Upgraded my wife's 26 to xt 1x11 group recently. Used medium cage derailleur. Works flawlessly unless she were to back pedal while on 42 tooth cassette ring. It will jump down a couple rings. Because her frame is so small, the angle is a little too extreme for back pedaling on that particular ring. Hasn't been an issue at all, though. She never makes it to that ring. Don't think that would happen on a larger frame spaced properly.

I just rebuilt my 26" hardtail this year with a full m8000 XT 1x11 setup. It's been 1x9 since 2008.

No issues. No backpedaling-chain-drop. Works flawlessly with a 30t 104bcd chainring and 11-40 XT cassette. Geared really, really low. I could go with 32 or 34 chainring and still be fine IMO.

Yep, 1 x 11 on my 26" Titus Motolite. I run some 4mm spacers between the crank spider and the chainring though to improve chainline.

1x11 works well on the Farley fatbike.

There is no change required in cage length between 8,9,10,11 speeds. They're just a number of cogs. Its the variation in tooth sizes that determine the cage length. Wrapping a length of chain around 9-42t is going to be different to 12-34T. It is this part that is relevant to cage length.

If I don't make an attempt, how will I know if it will work?

Depends on your legs / lungs. I've been running 1x9 since before it was cool. Since before narrow wide chainrings and clutch RD's.

I was pretty accustomed to pushing a 32/34 gear combo. Moving over to the 1x11...I decided to do a 30t 104bcd chainring mixed with the 11-40t cassette because an 11-40t shifts smoother than 42 or 46t. All that with short 26" tires gives me some gear ratios that can seriously climb a wall. If I had gone with an 11-46 cassette, it would be seriously crazy low!

I think if your drivetrain is worn out, it would be worth it to bump to the 1x11 instead of replacing old 9-speed stuff. That said, I'm considering moving my entire 11speed XT drivetrain over to my Stache where I really need the help.

Why do fat-bikers consider the 26" forum a valid place to participate experience like this? The question is all related to tire circumference. A 26x5 is like running a 29+ on the Stache which has no bearing on the question being asked.

    A fat bike is not a 26er.

Beg to differ, 26 inch rims. Dude. Same bike I run 26x 2.5" and 26x 3" It was a drivetrain question. Retro grouch.

Hehehe, no name-calling. I'm not a retro grouch at all. I just bought a 29x3 and love it.

I just installed GX Eagle on my Maverick and the RD cage does hang pretty low. However, the same group on a 650b bike would only yield around .75 inch in additional clearance, so no matter what there's not a lot. I doubt it'll be a big issue.

I used to have a 3x8 setup on my '97 Bontrager. Rode it with a mountain bike club really hard trying to keep up with those carbon 29ers and broke a few teeth off of some of the chainrings. The chain was stretched and it wrecked to cassette so I went onto JensonUSA and got a RaceFace narrow wide chainring and shimano xt 11-42 cassette, shifter, and derailleur. Works great and have had it on there for the last 800 miles of use. Only had to replace the chain once a couple weeks ago. Highly suggest converting to 1x. I run it on all three of my bikes now.

ive been 2x9 on my giant reign for years, finally stepping up to 1x11 with a oneUp 32t oval chainring and Box components 11-46 cassette. XT crank and XTR shifter/derailleur. Im excited to feel how it rides. worried I might want a larger chainring. I normally ride in my larger front gear, not sure how many teeth. I should check, but only drop low for steep climbs, also most everyopne i ride with is 27.5 or 29er so it gets hard to keep up until the downhills and tech sections

Think a drivetrain like this can fit on my specialized 1995 rockhopper aluminum comp frame?
