Tim C, you're geared too high, if I'm reading your question correctly.
2.35:1 gearing would put you at about a 22x32 derailleur equivalent low gear, and a 44x12 high gear. Going lower will impact your riding if you regularly push a tall gear.
Gears 1-7 (the lowest) are less efficient than gears 8-14.
Gears 3 & 5 (and 10 & 12) are least efficient in their respective clusters of 7.
The most efficient gear is 11, which is direct drive (1:1).
I'd pick a smaller chainring to make use of the 8+ gear range, or just to keep you out of 3 & 5 for your high-output vertical cruising.
